Awakening the Bear! - Russia 1941-42 takes you to the eastern front during Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of Russia. Many consider this time period to be the birth of modern warfare tactics that continue to be used and perfected by today's modern armies.

You command German or Soviet forces comprised of infantry squads, crewed support weapons, individual tanks, armored cars, artillery, and more.

Much effort went into distinguishing the units in the game by highlighting their historical strengths and weaknesses. For example, each tank's defense rating takes into account relative armor thickness, armor slope deflection percentage, speed, size, targeting mechanics, and crew training. All these factors are represented in an easy to learn target number system. You do not have to worry about the details; they are all built into the system! As the commander, you concentrate on tactics to execute your mission and firefight objectives.

Each firefight can be played dozens of times, exploring different tactics and use of available forces with every play-through. In Awakening the Bear, the Soviets have superior tank armor and firepower, which the Germans counter with integrated combined arms and communication nets.

The Programmatic Instruction Rule Book is only 11 pages long and is taught in sections. You read a few pages, and then play two firefights. The next few pages add more advanced unit control and arms to the game and instruct you on how to play the next few firefights. As you progress through the game, you will face more challenging tactical situations. The rules do not become more difficult, but the decisions you must make do!

    I received this game for Christmas and I must admit that I have been impressed with the high quality components and understandable rules. First of all the counters are huge! They are 1 inch counters in heavy thick stock. No need to trim counters as the counters just pop right out and some people are even using the frames to store their counters. The counters are very appealing to the eye and feel great when you are moving them around the board. The map is of high quality and the graphics are outstanding. The hexes are an inch wide. The rulebook and the scenario book come in 12 inch by 12 inch glossy paper which was something I was not used too but the graphics were very good and high quality. The playing cards are just playing cards and you also get 2 dice.

    The rules are simple especially to an old ASLer like me. They are laid out in a programmed instruction so that you learn a little at a time. In essence you read a couple of pages of rules and you are ready to play the first scenario. Of course for veteran wargamers, you probably can read the rules through in an hour or so and be ready to play.

    The game plays on an Action Point system that incorporates Unit Action Points with Command Action Points. You pick a unit and complete and action such as fire, move, pivot, etc…after you complete that action your opponent completes an action. You continue that until both player pass then the turn is over and you go on to the next turn. The system is set up for both players to be constantly involved about what is going on in the map. Great interaction and simplicity.
    I enjoy this game very much and have bought the other two expansions for it. I see a promising future for this game.

    The first thing anyone will notice about Conflict of Heroes is the quality of the components. From the beautiful mounted maps to the large, thick counters, this game is a very refreshing change from knocking over stacks of counters in tiny hexes on paper maps. The unit icons could be more distinctive and the cards are a bit flimsy, but these complaints are really just nit-picking at what is otherwise an exemplary presentation in a wargame.
    Luckily, Conflict of Heroes has a great system to match its components. The rules are clear and well-written, including notes from the designer about why certain choices were made. The system is ultimately about intelligently rationing a limited number of available actions per turn and strikes a very nice balance between detail and playability while offering a high level of interactivity between opponents. I would wholeheartedly recommend Conflict of Heroes to any ASL player looking for a comfortable change of pace for those occasions when you don't have quite enough time for an ASL scenario.
